Spiffy Gear has a new light bar kit, dubbed the Spekular Light. This versatile lighting kit consists of four “Light Blocks” and an innovative mounting system to create several different lighting configurations, from your basic stacked setup (see below) or interesting eyelights for portraits.
Don’t be dissuaded by the diminutive size, each Spekular kicks out 14.5 watts of light rated at 94+ CRI and 96+ TLCI. The lights are dimmable, but the caveat being that you cannot independently control each of the four lights. One “Master” light block controls the output of all four lights. Unfortunately, Spiffy doesn’t provide much information on their website about the lights, but there are several overviews you can see on YouTube that can answer your more pressing questions.
Another minus, the $650 price is not really going to get you into the Spekular ecosystem properly. You’ll need at least one, or maybe two Expansion Kits and a few accessories to get your rig truly up to speed.
Three applications immediately leap out for the Spiffy Spekular kit. First, is for product photography. The lights can be independently positioned (but not controlled) around a table for your product shots, allowing you to blast light exactly where you want it. Second, is for lighting tight spaces, such as cars or tight interiors. Finally, with the variety of ways the light blocks can be positioned utilizing their unique connections, you can create circles, squares and even a cool star pattern, for portraits.
Spiffy Gear’s Spekular Light start at $650 and climb rapidly.
