Removu Launches K1 Stabilized Video Camera

A Korean company called Removu has launched a new gimbal-stabilized 4K Video camera. The ensemble looks like a microphone with a spherical camera mounted on top of a control stick. As typical with these asian products, it’s hard to say if this setup actually delivers. The hype videos don’t actually look that crispy, even when viewed at maximum resolution on a 5K monitor. So you can be the judge.

The Removu (do these companies even entertain the thought of consulting with English-speaking individuals before naming things?? —Ed.) K1 can shoot 4K video at 30 fps, FHD up to 120 fps and Basic HD up to 240 fps for ultra slow motion. To has a slightly narrower field of vision that the GoPro and other action cams out there, but its long focal length means things stay in focus as close as 12 inches. It can take 12MP stills and even has a Quick Selfie Mode to instantly rotate the camera pointing back at the operator.

The K1 is quipped with a 3-axis stabilizing gimbal and constructed with brushless DC motors. The K1 has a custom designed F2.8 wide angle lens in front of a 1/2.3″ CMOS 12MP Sony IMX377 sensor. The grip contains a 4-way joystick that allows you to control the camera’s position with a single hand. The four different modes include Pan and Follow mode, Motion time-lapse mode and Selfie mode. The interchangeable smart battery claims to provide up-to 4 hours of continuous filming on a single charge.

The iOS and Android app provides several additional features, including the ability to manipulate the camera remotely, update the firmware and program time-lapses. The built-in 1.5″ LCD screen allows you to easily frame your shots. The one savvy included feature is the 1/4″-20 female connection on the bottom for mounting on a tripod. We wish we could tell you if plunking down over 400 beans for this unit was worth it. But Removu hasn’t provided press with review units, so you’re on your own.

The Removu K1 costs $429. An extra battery will set you back $49 and the accessory package, which includes a mic, dead cat and charging cradle will increase your investment another $49.
