TASCAM has announced a clever audio-for-video product for videographers who are looking to enhance the audio quality of their productions without going wireless. TASCAM is positioning this for event and wedding videographers, but this could be a savvy solution for iPhone video productions, provided you utilize some sort of clapper system or use the audio sync feature in Final Cut Pro. The only caveat is the price point of $199 may put this out of range for hobbyists.
» As many of you know, few things are more frustrating than good video
with poor audio.
TASCAM is looking to solve a couple of distinct audio-for-video problems with the DR-10L, an ultra-compact recorder with lavalier microphone system in a compact, easily concealed unit. First off, the DR-10L aims to eliminate the uncertainties of wireless microphone systems whether it be interference and/or the subject going out of range. Second, being that the unit is self-contained, there’s no need to add a cumbersome receiver to your camera rig.
Featuring a quality lavalier microphone and compact body pack, the DR-10L captures 48kHz/24-bit Broadcast WAV files to microSD or microSDHC cards, powering through up to ten hours of recording on a single AAA battery.
The DR-10L also includes a built-in limiter to prevent clipping, a low-cut filter to reduce wind and rumble noise, and a bright OLED display that’s readable in direct sunlight. And TASCAM’s Dual Recording mode captures a lower level safety track to safeguard against unexpected source level spikes.
For DSLR or smartphone productions, it’s a compelling alternative to traditional wireless setups. However, for interviews and documentaries, the DR-10L could be a perfect backup system to complement RF rigs, providing ease-of-mind as a high-quality contingency plan.
TASCAM, the professional audio division of TEAC Corporation, is expected to ship the DR-10L in late October for a street price of $199.99.
