Hong Kong based Conc Tech Company, marketing under the Mokacam moniker, is now shipping their new 4K action video camera. The company used crowdfunding site Indiegogo to fund their new product that appears to take direct aim at GoPro’s lackluster Session camera, coming in at the same price point, but offering much more in terms of innovation and features.
Conc makes a big deal about the size of the Mokacam, but in our evaluation, it’s actually not that small. Certainly not as small as the GoPro Session, and probably not that much smaller than the Hero4, especially with the waterproof housing. They tout the size over and over on their site when they should really be going after the Session’s poor feature set. However, the reality is that the Mokacam is going after the Hero4 product line, which is a misstep since it appears to fall short of that watermark.
Despite their ambitious market expectations, they do bring some innovation to the ActionCam market in terms of hot-swappable battery packs, and their add-on, swiveling viewscreen accessory. The battery packs, which claim to last about an hour of filming, can be swapped out on the fly, allowing you to continue recording “without missing a moment.” That claim may be subject to file size constraints, which we cannot substantiate since we haven’t tested the camera in our lab or in the wild. The camera records in 4K with a 16MP Sony sensor and a 152° field of view.
Other features include magnetic mounting, allowing you to place the camera on a metal pole, your car hood (not recommended by Future Filmmaking without a tether) or any other metal object, as well as motion activation. Motion activation seems like a stretch for the Mokacam’s core competency, but Conc probably wanted to reach out to individuals interested in home security, or maybe even the hunting market.
It contains a 7-layer glass lens and the Sony IMX206 16MP sensor, compared to the Hero4 Black (Sony IMX117 12MP), and shoots 4K at 15fps*; 2K at 15fps and 1080p at 60fps, according to the Indigogo site. It has an immature iPhone/Android app for basic sharing via WiFi connectivity and your usual accompaniment of mounting GoPro-inspired mounting options. They have also partnered with Feiyu Tech to provide a hand-held 3-axis gimbal stabilizer, and more interestingly, a mountable stabilization system.
*Please Note: The Indiegogo site lists two different specs at 4k, 15fps and 25fps
Right now, you can score the Adventure Bundle, which includes the Mokacam camera with waterproof case, adapter mount and micro USB charger, backup module, rotatable screen module, 2.4G wireless remote, and a carrying case for $199.
