DJI has just put its foot on the gas as it guns towards GoPro’s market share. Known for it’s drone technology, the Chinese company out of Shenzhen, has just released what could be the first significant uppercut to GoPro with an innovative 4K action video camera that comes with a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer. And it’s only $649… In addition to incorporating DJI’s Zenmuse 3-axis gimbal stabilizer in a pistol grip format, the Osmo claims to deliver 4K video and 120fps HD video, plus time-lapse and a ton of still image functionality.
In addition to all the all the video action, the Osmo has several compelling still options, which should appear to the selfie crowd. The Automatic Panorama mode makes shooting 360° panoramas easier than ever. Just hold the Osmo up above your head and tap the shutter button. The camera will rotate, capturing images as it goes while staying completely level. Take long exposure shots without blur, even without a tripod. The stabilization system in the Osmo keeps the camera totally still so you can freehand capture stills of up to 2 seconds. With practice, you can get even longer shots. Now you can capture night time cityscapes.
Rounding out the video mojo is the Osmo’s ability to capture the passage of time. Whether standing still for a stationary timelapse, or moving through your world for a hyperlapse, you can create smooth videos automatically and easily without a tripod. Somewhat under the radar is also enhanced audio, something that’s certainly missing from competing action cameras. An integrated microphone allows onboard audio recording, with advanced controls like audio gain settings. A standard 3.5mm port is also available, allowing you to utilize your own high-quality microphones.
